Philosophy and Learning

At Brabyns Nursery School, we believe that the early years should be filled with curiosity, creativity, exploration and discovery. Our children are encouraged to develop confidence, independence and resilience as they learn through play, meaningful experiences and supportive relationships.

We combine the latest thinking in early years education with well-established educational approaches, placing each child at the centre of their learning journey. We also believe that parents are essential partners in their child’s development, working closely with us to ensure every child feels secure, supported and inspired to thrive.

Our enquiry-based approach to learning allows children’s interests, questions and ideas to help shape the experiences we provide. Through carefully planned, co-constructed opportunities, children are encouraged to investigate, problem-solve, communicate and make sense of the world around them.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework underpins all that we do, ensuring that children’s learning supports every area of development — from personal, social and emotional development, communication and language, and physical development, to early literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design.

Our experienced Early Years team spends time observing, interacting with and listening to children as they play and learn. By developing a deep understanding of each child’s individual interests, strengths and next steps, we are able to provide meaningful interactions and carefully planned experiences that extend their thinking, deepen their understanding and support their ongoing development.

Outdoor Learning

We believe that outdoor learning is an essential part of a child’s early development. Children at Brabyns Nursery benefit from daily opportunities to explore, investigate and learn in our outdoor environments, where they can develop confidence, independence, physical coordination and a strong connection with the natural world.

Through free-flow outdoor play, nature-based activities and Forest School-inspired experiences, children are encouraged to take appropriate risks, solve problems, work collaboratively and develop resilience. Outdoor learning is carefully woven into our curriculum, supporting children’s physical wellbeing, communication skills, creativity and understanding of the world around them, all within the warm, nurturing and supportive environment that is central to life at Brabyns Nursery.

Specialist Teaching

One of the many benefits of attending Brabyns Nursery is access to a range of specialist teaching and enrichment opportunities during the school term. Our preschool children enjoy experiences in Music, Art, Drama, Physical Education and Spanish, helping to broaden their interests, develop confidence and foster creativity from an early age.

These experiences complement our rich early years curriculum, which also includes strong foundations in communication, phonics, early reading, mathematical understanding and physical development, delivered by our qualified and experienced Early Years practitioners.

Wellbeing

At Brabyns Nursery, the emotional wellbeing of every child is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that children learn and thrive when they feel safe, secure, valued and cared for. Our children benefit from opportunities to move freely between indoor and outdoor environments, as we understand the importance of fresh air, physical activity and exploration in supporting their happiness, confidence and overall wellbeing. Our caring and experienced Early Years team build strong, positive relationships with every child, providing a nurturing environment where children feel known, supported and encouraged. Through consistency of care and familiar faces, children develop a strong sense of security and belonging. Through a range of wellbeing-focused experiences, including music, sensory activities, movement and mindfulness, we support children’s emotional development and help them build the foundations for resilience, self-confidence and positive relationships.

Reception Ready

At Brabyns Nursery School, we provide a carefully planned Pre-Reception experience that helps children develop the confidence, independence and key skills needed for a smooth transition into Reception. Through a balance of purposeful play, daily literacy and mathematics activities, specialist experiences in Spanish, Music, P.E. and Drama, and opportunities for collaborative learning, children build strong foundations in communication, early reading, writing, number understanding and social development. Our nurturing approach ensures that every child is supported to become a confident, curious and enthusiastic learner, ready to embrace the next stage of their educational journey.
