When the numbers become larger the children choose to use Base Ten Blocks. Which is again a physical resource that allows the children to see and feel the numbers that they are generating.

Recently, the children have been learning how to partition two-digit numbers by using the ‘Whole-Part Model’ which builds upon the prior learning of how to make numbers using the Numicon and Base Ten Blocks.

The children can see in their mind’s eye how many tens and ones are needed to generate a number. This fluency of number fact families such as 10 + 2 = 12, allows the children to see

10 + [ ? ] = 12 or [ ? ] – 2 = 10.
